YOGA: Change My Life

I noticed changes in my emotional well-being immediately. My mind was much more calm and peaceful. Historically, my mind was always busy chattering about my worries and fears. But through yoga, I found brief yet blissful moments where I felt nothing but happiness and peace.  I know that seems hard to believe. I was skeptical when my friend told me of yoga’s healing capabilities but I found firsthand that it is true.

I won’t lie: in 2015, I spent three years in different yoga teacher training schools worldwide. It was the most stressful time of my life. Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga Yoga. I was blessed to meet and be surrounded by beautiful people, kind souls, and one rigorous teacher who terrified me. But that is another story.

I wanted to find answers deep in my practice and calm my mind. No one could truly be prepared for it. The world not only looks and feels different, but the world also treats you differently. Don’t be afraid of failing. You can’t succeed without failing, there is no shame in failure, only in not trying. Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles, and less-than-perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more self-confident, and more successful.

We all have our low points. Whether they are personal or professional. We hit roadblocks and obstacles all the time. At some point, we think quitting is the only option. But, let me be the first to say the day you quit, is the day you lose forever.

People ask me all the time:
I am too old for Yoga. – I am not flexible for Yoga.
I am too overweight for Yoga. – I am too [fill in the blank] for Yoga.
As Sri K. Pattabhi Jois said, “Do your practice and all is coming.”

“I Move Differently”

Yoga is my way of life in all aspects.

I continued to do my 90 minutes of Ashtanga Yoga. Four times a week. I have the best of both worlds. I front-line Healthcare worker and Owner & Led Teacher at Urban Yoga Shiva, now Miami, Florida. Never, Ever Give Up.

Yoga Is For Everyone.

PRACTICING YOGA WITH COMMON INJURIES
Poses and the Muscles Applied
As mentioned, each pose targets a specific muscle group. Below are some
0f the more popular positions and how they may apply to a specific injury.

  • Surya Namaskar – This is a cross-legged sitting pose with intermingled raised arm positioning. It strengthens the lower back and opens the groin and hips.
  • Standing Yoga Asanas – Position yourself on all fours with extended and retracted spine movement. This helps the spinal (erector) muscle group.
  •  Bhujangasana – Lying on your stomach with forearms and palms flat on the floor and raising your chest. It helps open the chest and strengthen the back and arms.
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana – Facedown as if doing a push-up. Raise bottom to ceiling keeping arms and knees straight. Stretches back and hamstrings.
